avoid spreading head lice over the holidays

The holidays are here, and that means you’ll be spending more time with friends and extended family. While it’s nice to see those warm smiles again, you do have to be mindful of spreading germs and head lice. But just as you can take precautions to stop the spread of illness, you can also take steps to prevent the spread of head lice.

Lice typically spread more frequently during the fall and winter months since people are spending more time together in close quarters. Families get together for the holidays, and there’s more hugging and snuggles between grandparents, grandchildren, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Fortunately, My Hair Helpers has you covered for the holiday season! Below are some of our best tips for preventing head lice over the holidays.

Avoid Direct Contact

More than 90 percent of head lice cases are spread through direct contact like hugging or taking a family photograph. Lice can crawl very quickly, so when two heads touch, it creates an opportunity for lice to spread. One of the best things you can do is remind your child not to engage in direct contact, especially with other children.

Wear Hair in Tight Hairstyles

Another thing you can do is put your child’s hair up into a tight hairstyle, such as a braid or bun. This shouldn’t be too hard since it’s the holiday season, and you probably plan on doing your child’s hair. Don’t forget to spray their hair with some hair spray or a lice repellent - this will detract lice from climbing onto your child’s head.

Bring Your Own Accessories

If you plan on spending the night at a family member’s house, or vice versa, make sure everyone has their own combs, hair brushes, hair accessories, etc. Although it’s not as common for lice to spread this way, it can still happen. Packing a small kit with your child’s individual accessories will make it easy for them to use their own supplies. The same goes for hats and coats.

Apply Lice Prevention Products

My Hair Helpers has a great smelling lice spray that deters lice from crawling onto your child’s head. You can order it on Amazon or from our website. Just a few spritzes are enough to keep lice away - and your child’s hair will smell like mint! You can also pick up a lice comb to comb through your child’s hair. If any lice are present, the comb will pick them out. (And here's why you need a lice comb not a regular comb to get the job done!)

Know the Signs of Head Lice

Pay attention to the signs of head lice, such as itching, something moving in the hair, irritability, difficulty sleeping and sores on the head caused by scratching. If you notice any of these signs on your child, check them for lice immediately. Prompt treatment is necessary for getting rid of an infestation.

My Hair Helpers has a full line of chemical-free lice treatment and prevention products. You can order them online and have them sent to your home for discreet, convenient lice removal.
